Stop Believing These Roofing Myths

Posted July 5, 2021 in Roofing tips

Your roof is the shield between your family and being exposed to the elements – so it’s important that you keep it in good condition. The best solution is always to have a professional come by for an inspection, checking the key vital signs of your roof. However, there’s a lot of misinformation out there about when and why to bring someone in to take a look. In this article we look at three of the biggest myths surrounding roof maintenance and repair.

Myth 1: It’s Okay to Put a New Roof on Top of an Old One

There’s a reason why it’s illegal in many states to place a new roof over an old one. The temptation to do so comes from wanting to patch up issues on your roof and to deal with the symptoms of a roof in need of replacement. Adding additional material over a roof which isn’t up to scratch in the first place is never a good idea and will ultimately lead to further problems down the road. The extra weight puts strain on a roof which was probably in need of a full refurbishment replacement. If and when these problems arrive the roof repair will likely end up costing you more. Not only does this mean that you’re paying for the labour for a repair or installation twice over, but also the cost of the roofing materials themselves

Myth 2: No Leaks? No Problem!

It may seem like there’s nothing wrong with your roof so it can be easy to simply forget that it’s even there. The problem with this approach is that your roof only gets looked at when something has gone wrongly enough to call in a professional. Prevention is always better than a cure, so make sure that you get your roof serviced regularly to ensure you don’t have to deal with surprise or emergency problems. Aside from leaks, your roof could be suffering from moss or mould infestations, animals or birds making nests and burrows or even just issues with too much air escaping – causing issues with your heating and cooling systems. Other things to look out for are loose shingles, overfull or hanging gutters, or unevenness on the ridge at the head of the spars. Looking beyond the roof itself, make sure that any large trees on your property aren’t veering too close to your roof as they grow. All it can take is one powerful storm to knock a branch into your house causing untold damage, so be aware!

Myth 3: New Roofs Do Not need Regular Maintenance

While most roofs have a lifespan exceeding 20 or 30 years before needing to be serviced or replaced, if you want to get the most of that lifespan you’re going to need to pay attention to it and make sure it’s maintenanced regularly. Sure, there might not be any pressing issues such as leaks or drips, but keep an eye out for damaged shingles and flashing after storms and any signs of vegetation making its home in your roof. Even if it’s a new roof it may still require that these problems are nipped in the bud, before they become major issues. One way or another, you’re going to eventually need to call in roofing services.
